Last year, I had a student who had a rough home life. He did
not have a place he felt safe at. Even at school, he thought his dad would show
up and hurt him. He was below grade level academically and socially he had
little friends. All this little boy wanted was to read. I would work with him every
day and stay after school one day a week for an hour to tutor him. By the end
of first grade, his work improved drastically. When I spoke to his teacher this
year to see how he was doing, she said he was on a third grade reading level. I
was so proud of him that despite his home life, he never gave up and learned
how to read on his own.
Your story touched my heart as well. It reminded me of several students I had in the past. For you to take the time to help that child is amazing. I know he will never forget you for helping him. It was nice that you checked on him. I hope things have changed for the better for him. Teachers are a blessing!
